2020 Summer Olympics has been postponed and the new date is expected to begin after 365 days on Friday, July 23, 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Olympic Charter dictates what needs to be included as part of the opening ceremony. There needs to be a formal ceremonial aspect to the ceremony which includes welcoming speeches and a parade of all the athletes taking part. It is also expected that there will be an artistic display that celebrates the culture of the host country.
Preparations for the Olympic ceremony
The preparations for the opening ceremony begin years before the ceremony actually takes place. The organizers wanted the ceremony to highlight the very best of Tokyo and Japan. They consulted experts and members of the general public to get their opinions about what they would like to see. They used this feedback to start to plan both the opening and closing ceremonies.

Some preparatory events will be started early as Wednesday, the 21st of July at Olympic Stadium, in Tokyo and the main game will take place on Friday, the 23rd of July and the ending ceremony is on Sunday, the 8th of August.

There were several aspects that the organizers felt should be included in the ceremony. This included the significance of the games being held in Japan and the vision it has for the games. The themes of the ceremony will include coexistence and peace, as well as a celebration of the athletes and the country of Japan.
The Chief Creative Director for the opening and closing ceremonies is Mansai Nomura. He is a well-known kyogen actor in Japanese theater. Marco Balich of Balich Worldwide Shows will act as the producer of the ceremonies.
The Nintendo game console character Mario is expected to feature heavily in the opening ceremony. In the handover that took place at the Rio closing ceremony, the Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe dressed up as Mario. The theme of peace will also run through the opening ceremony and this will be symbolized through the use of paper cranes and doves.
About Japanese National Anthem
The Japanese Nation Anthem will be performed at the ceremony. The lyrics from the anthem are some of the oldest that is still in use today. The anthem is called Kimigayo and it dates back to the 1880s. The title of the song is translated as His Imperial Majesty’s Reign.
Olympic National Anthem
The anthem of the Olympic games will also feature in the ceremony, as it has done in previous ceremonies. The anthem is referred to as the Olympic hymn and it will be performed as the flags are raised in the opening ceremony. It is expected that the lyrics to the anthem will be sung in Japanese.
The venues of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics
The National Stadium was demolished in 2015 to make way for the New National Stadium which was to be built for the Olympic Games. The IOC was handed the new stadium in November 2019 so that they could begin their preparations. The capacity of the stadium is over 60,000.
The Olympic cauldron will be lit at the New Stadium as part of the opening ceremony. However, for the duration of the games, a public cauldron by the Tokyo riverside will be lit using the flame. There would be difficulties with retaining the cauldron at the stadium while it is in use.
